Hello humans, I’m back! I went into a severe book slump because of all the trashy YA books that I was reading (Yeah I stopped reading YA for 3 years… It was THAT bad). Since my interest has been piqued again, I’ve decided to continue with my reviews đ However, I don’t really have the energy to do such long reviews all the time, which is why I’m changing up the format a little and doing short reviews instead đ Let’s finally get started whoo!

This was a great reintroduction to the world of YA. The writing was clear and simple which could be a turn-off for some, but after that tragic mess that was Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi (I read 50 pages and gave up), I’m perfectly ok with this. I actually don’t have much to say about this book as I just found it a quick and easy read. I liked the 3 main characters as they had their own distinct voices and personalities and were not annoying in the least (wow, this is what my standard has fallen to). Having 3 teenage girls plot revenge against the people whom they perceive to have wronged them is definitely an interesting premise that could have gone very wrong. I’m really glad that they didn’t weaponise misogyny against other girls.
Overall, I found this book to be pretty decent, though I wish that that weird supernatural thing wasn’t included in the book. It really threw the whole book off, but I didn’t really consider it in my rating as it was just a small part of the book. Oh well, what can we do when the authors decide to add in weird shit.

No, you are not misremembering, I have indeed reviewed this book before. I first read it at the end of 2016 and had essentially forgotten everything about it, which is why I decided to reread it before moving on to the second book of this series (FINALLY, right???) It actually felt like a chore before I started as I remembered how I was slightly underwhelmed and disappointed by it. Imagine my utter shock when I was still awake at 6am after reading the book for FIVE STRAIGHT HOURS. I guess it’s not surprising that my taste in books has changed since 4 years have passed, but Jesus I’m still shocked that I now enjoy the book SO MUCH. I previously gave it 4 stars but to be very honest, it was more like 3.75 LOL. I still loved reading about Helen and Darby’s relationship and in my opinion, it’s one of the best things about the book. It really warms the cold, dead recesses of my heart đ

I need to get something out of the way.
My Haiku of Hate:
The Duke of Selburn
Can fuck all the way off to
The cosmos beyond.
It was supposed to be ‘infinity and beyond’ but that unfortunately does not work in the haiku.
I had a headache by the end of the book as I’d been reading for 13 hours straight at that point (I slept at 10am that ‘night’), but I still found a couple minutes before hitting the hay to rage to my friend about the utter disdain I have for Duke Selburn. In order to show you the depths of my outrage, I shall be quoting my texts to her exactly.
“I despise, DESPISE, D E S P I S E THE OTHER GUY IN THE LOVE TRIANGLE. EXCEPT THAT IT’S NOT A LOVE TRIANGLE, THIS ASSHOLE JUST KEEPS TRYING TO INVOLVE HIMSELF WITH THE COUPLE.”
“The blatant BLATANT DISREGARD FOR HER WORDS. ANNOYING. OBNOXIOUS.”
Wow is he annoying. Lady Helen either has the patience of a saint or is very conditioned to be polite at all times (possibly a combination of both) because I would have told him to get out of my face and fuck all the way off eons ago. Holy macaroni fuckaroni.
Apart from the dickwad mentioned above, everyone else was great, or at least tolerable. Helen doesn’t give off Special Snowflake vibes at all (thank the gods) and her relationship with Darby gives me warm fuzzy feelings ⤠I have no idea as to how the romance is going to be resolved but by the gods, PLEASE get her away from the Duke. He clearly does not respect her enough to be worthy of the title of ‘Lady Helen’s husband’. Urgh I cannot with him.
Absolutely cannot wait to read the final book in series. Even if it turns out to be another sleepless night for me đ
